“There are some musicians who transform difficulty in the world and their lives to create positive music for the world to hear and find comfort in; we find Andrea Molinari to be fully authentic in this role. It is refreshing and uplifting, and we look forward to his new project with great enthusiasm.”

Biography

Born in Jesi in 1986, Andrea Molinari is an Italian guitarist, composer, and arranger, regarded as one of the most compelling voices of his generation. From an early age, he showed a deep passion for music, which led him to move to Rome to pursue his studies. He graduated with honors from the Università della Musica and later from the “Santa Cecilia” Conservatory, further refining his skills at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.

His international experience includes two extended stays in New York, where he had the opportunity to engage with some of the most influential figures on the American jazz scene, such as Peter Bernstein, Charles Altura, Mike Moreno, Lage Lund, Jonathan Kreisberg, Seamus Blake, and Joel Frahm. He also took part in masterclasses with jazz legends like Benny Golson and Pat Martino.

In 2010, he was awarded the prestigious "Jimmy Woode" prize for Best Guitarist, presented by an exceptional jury composed of Kurt Rosenwinkel, Rick Margitza, Antonio Sanchez, Eddie Gomez, Dado Moroni, and Gegè Telesforo.

In 2018, he was selected as the winner of the national competition for an Italian-French residency, promoted by the French Institute in Italy, the French Embassy in Italy, MIDJ (Italian Jazz Musicians), and SIAE. The residency took place at the Casa del Jazz in Rome during the Una Striscia di Terra Feconda festival and included a collaborative project with renowned French musician Médéric Collignon, culminating in a concert broadcast on Radio3 Suite.

He has performed at leading jazz festivals, theaters, and clubs across Europe, Asia, and the United States, collaborating with internationally renowned musicians both in the studio and on stage. He has also appeared on television and radio programs and contributed to film productions and soundtracks.
His debut album, L’era dell’Acquario feat. Logan Richardson, received widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics. In 2019, he released his second album, 51, with the prestigious American label Ropeadope Records—renowned for producing innovative artists like Terrace Martin, Christian Scott, Snarky Puppy, and Aaron Parks. 51 was selected by Musica Jazz magazine as one of the “Albums of the Month” and included among the “Greatest Jazz Albums” at the Jazzit Awards. The album earned enthusiastic reviews from major publications such as All About Jazz, Amadeus, Corriere della Sera, la Repubblica, and many others. Tracks from the album were broadcast on numerous stations, including Radio3 Rai, SoundCheck Radio 24, and several international outlets. Three tracks—“13.13,” “Groovy Dentist,” and “Butterfly Eaters”—were also submitted for consideration at the 62nd Grammy Awards.

Andrea was a featured guest on the Radio3 Rai program Piazza Verdi, where he gave an interview and performed live with his quintet.

His latest album, Awakening | Il tutto nel nulla — his second for Ropeadope Records— came out on September 12, 2025, and features Dutch alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder.

In its September issue, Musica Jazz magazine featured an in-depth interview and review by journalist and author Nicola Gaeta, highlighting Molinari's artistic journey, his musical vision, and the evolution of his sound.

After four years of teaching at the "Tito Schipa" Conservatory of Music in Lecce, in March 2024 he won the first public competition in Italy for a jazz guitar professorship (by examination and merit), securing his current position at the "Gaetano Braga" Conservatory of Music in Teramo.

All songs composed by Andrea Molinari Lyrics by Camilla Battaglia

"The Pyramid of Cheops is the oldest, and also the largest, of the three main pyramids in the Giza necropolis. It is considered the most ancient of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and its angles of inclination are approximately 51 degrees. Guitarist Andrea Molinari, originally from the Marche region but based in Rome, has long been fascinated by numerology and esotericism. His debut album was entitled L'era dell'Acquario (The Age of Aquarius, the modern era according to the ancient Mayans), and from that inspiration he has now chosen to title this second recording, released by the prestigious Ropeadope Records, simply 51. The album presents nine tracks – all original compositions – with a clear preference for song form. This is a distinctive feature of Andrea’s approach to music, already evident in his previous work: a marked attention to melodic accessibility, coupled with the ability to surround himself with partners – here, some of the musicians currently bringing prestige to Italian jazz – capable of sustaining interplay that is both dynamic and refined. A truly beautiful jazz record."
Nicola Gaeta – Musica Jazz

"Guitarist Andrea Molinari brings together six musicians in the studio (Matteo Bortone, bass; Enrico Zanisi, piano, Rhodes and synths; Enrico Morello, drums; Camilla Battaglia and Clementina Regina, vocals; Alessandro Presti, trumpet) to create a work that focuses more on writing – songs and melodies – than on solo improvisations. 51 unfolds across ten compositions, each marked by its own distinctive timbral identity, ranging from trio to sextet: sophisticated textures ("51"), hard bop ("Red Triangle"), explorations between electronic and ambient sounds, touches of R’n’B, and more melancholic, dreamlike ballads."
Jazzit

"Keep an eye on him. Even with only a couple of albums as a leader behind him, Andrea Molinari is much more than just a promise of Italian jazz. In his new 51 – which follows L'era dell'Acquario – the 33-year-old guitarist from the Marche region confirms and develops the ideas already present in his brilliant debut: a constant dialogue between the language of modern jazz and the song form, between improvisation and a love of beautiful melody. Passionate about numerology and esotericism, Molinari confidently leads a core group featuring three outstanding talents from the Italian scene: pianist/keyboardist Enrico Zanisi, bassist Matteo Bortone, and drummer Enrico Morello. That’s not all: on several tracks, singer Camilla Battaglia and soprano Clementina Regina add their voices, bringing new colors to the music. In this setting, Molinari chooses to use his electric guitar as a vital catalyst of energy and as the driving force around which the music revolves. No showmanship or empty virtuosity – just the notes that truly matter."
Amadeus Magazine

"Molinari’s compositional vein convinces with its compactness: well-defined themes and decisive structures are enriched by intriguing developments and asymmetries. The arrangements feature unusual sequences of ensemble writing and soloist spaces. Beyond proving himself a thoughtful leader who motivates his partners to enter the progressions at the right moments, as an instrumentalist Molinari delivers a linear, measured phrasing based on consistent harmonic scales, showcasing a clear and articulate touch—without venturing into the rock-derived excesses that often characterize guitar playing."

"L'era dell'Acquario (The Age of Aquarius was how ancient Mayas called the modern era) refers to a current understanding of the African-American language in which tradition plays a fundamental role, enriched by the capacity for synthesis of the very good musicians that make part of the quintet."
Nicola Gaeta – Musica Jazz

"Composition is indeed the strong point of Andrea Molinari’s record, which is able to showcase a powerful personality thanks to tracks characterized by well-devised melodies, modern-sounding atmospheres and formal structures that stray from trite, ordinary formulas."
Eugenio Mirti – Jazzit
